Malam Adamu Adamu, the Minister of Education, set up 10 ad hoc committees on Thursday to look into petitions brought against 10 Nigeria tertiary institutions. The institutions include 3 polytechnics and 7 universities . The minister said the allegations brought against these institutions are bordering on abuse of due process, mismanagement, immorality, fraud and corruption, and many others.
The involved institutions are Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, Kastina State; Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State; University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom, and Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State.
Others are University of Abuja, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, University of Calabar; Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State; Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State and Yaba College of Technology, Lagos State.
Aminu said the ad hoc committee were inaugurated in accordance with the Federal Government’s allegiance to promoting accountability, due process, transparency and fairness in the control of public managements. He also said the allegations made against the governing councils and managements of these schools had created mistrust and hostility which tampered with the smooth running of academic system.
The job of the committees are to study and investigate the allegations; the institutions involved, application of funds, grants and loans meant for specifics projects, procedures for awarding contracts, appointments and promotion among others.
Also, “To seek to determine the veracity of the claims and counter-claims by considering the circumstances and talking to as many witnesses as possible.To meet and interview the writers of the petitions and establish the basis of their claims". “To ensure fair hearing by meeting with, and listening to explanations from all those against whom the petitions have been written.”
Adamu and the Permanent Secretary of the Fed. Min. of Education, Dr Folashade Yemi Esan also urged the committees to come up with adequate recommendations after their findings and to suggest penalties if necessary.
In his response, on behalf of the Chairmen and members of the panels, Malam Salihu Abubukar said the task would be carried out with a sense of duty and their recommendations would be based on facts and the fear of God and that the committees have ten days each to submit their reports.
