The Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, dropped the hint at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti while commissioning some recently completed projects there. Indications emerged yesterday that no fewer than 60 million indigent Nigerians will enjoy unhindered access to medical care under President Muhammadu Buhari’s government within the next two years.He said that the Federal government will build 10,000 primary health facilities in the 774 local government areas across the country for effective service delivery to the people towards de-congesting the nation’s tertiary health institutions.
He said,“The tertiary institutions are not meant to treat malaria or skin rashes, but to attend to critical issues. We are determined to take away over 70 % of patients from the teaching hospitals, but the heads of tertiary institutions must find a way to relate freely with these cadres for effective healthcare delivery.
He also said, “We won’t abandon that cadres, so that the sequence of referrals could be protected.”
On the leadership tussle and strike in federal hospitals, which has become a recurring decimal in federal institutions across the country, the Minister said: “It is unfortunate that our national hospitals are better known for strikes rather than services.”
The Professor of Gynecology also expressed worry over the leadership tussles and incessant strikes in the federal institutions in recent times, warning the medical personnel that the unsavoury situations are killing the sector and reducing its quality of service delivery with its attendant consequences to the populace.
The Ekiti state Governor Ayodele Fayose, who was represented by the speaker, Hon. Kola Oluwawole and Chief Babalola, urged the hospital’s management to find ways of ensuring industrial harmony in the hospital
Commending the Ado Ekiti hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Dr Majekodunmi Ayodele, for his work in the hospital, Prof. Adewole said; “ what is symbolic about today is that we are commissioning 12 projects through the partnership and Memorandum of understanding this hospital signed with Afe Babalola University.
He however thanked "Aare Afe Babalola for his investment not only in education, but also in this hospital”.
Dr Ayodele, who assured the agitated workers that all their dues will be paid, appealed to the Ministry of Health to grant the request for the payment of take off grants to the hospital as a former medical centre and for its new status as a teaching hospital.
