NIGERIANS WARNED AGAINST "PONMO" CONSUMPTION

An alarm has been raised by the Ogun State government on the discovery of poisonous cattle hide and skin also known as ‘Ponmo’ imported by some devilish businessmen into Nigeria market  and thereby warn people against the purchase and eating of such.
The  State Government discovered that the said the hides popularly known as "Ponmo" brought to the market for people's consumption was laced with tanning chemicals for preservation of the Ponmo. 
Mrs. Sokefun, the Ogun State Commissioner for Agriculture while speaking to the market women yesterday therefore implored the sellers as well as the residents against  the  consumption of the poisonous  ponmo. Mrs Shokefun described the ponmo to be unusually thick and brownish black in colour with a very offensive odour and the price is very cheap compared to the price of normal ponmo. She explained further that the imported ponmo is not meant for human consumption, but as leather material for production  from Europe and some other countries.
She  said among other chemicals used for the preservation of the ponmo are Tanning chemicals like fungicide and biocide.
