Martin Winterkorn resigns as chief executive of Europe's largest automobile maker Volkswagen.
"I am shocked by what has happened in the past few days. I am especially stunned that offenses of this scope within the Volkswagen Group were possible," it says in a statement Winterkorn.
''As CEO, I take responsibility for the irregularities became known in diesel engines. I therefore ask the Supervisory Board to make an agreement to end my role as CEO of the Volkswagen Group''.
"I am doing this in the interests of the company, although I am not aware of any misbehavior" said Winterkorn.
