Stakeholders in ICT ecosystem, at the 2015 e-conference in Abuja not long ago, have revealed that except Nigeria fully adopts electronic voting system in 2019 general elections, it may be impossible for the country to enjoy actual benefits of democracy. They then urged the current administration in the country to facilitate the implementation of e-voting system in the coming general elections in Nigeria so as to combat electoral short-comings the country normally experience in elections.
Prof. Cleopas Angaye, the former Director of the National Information Technology Development Agency, NITD, said in his own remark that the Federal Government of Nigeria needs to give all necessary support in favor of e-voting ahead of time and also demonstrate its leadership in ICT to the rest of the continent stressing that Nigeria is ripe for the task.
Prof. Attahiru Jega, the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, however in his own previous statement said Nigeria as at present lacks local content software and hardware system that can enhance the full implementation of e-voting in the country’s general elections.
