NIGERIA UNIVERSITIES TO EMBARK ON AN INDEFINITE STRIKE BY DEC. 24

In response to the Federal Government’s directive informing Vice-Chancellors of universities to remove more than 2,000 retrenched staff from their pay-roll, the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities, SSANU, has directed its members aacross Nigeria to embark on an indefinite strike from December 24.

This  decision was reached by the National Executive Council of SSANU to protect the interest of their members as well as salvage the education sector from collapsing. Addressing journalists on their outcome of its meeting, the National President of SSANU, Comrade Samson Ugwoke, said the action of government to retrench over 2,000 staff was contrary to the Federal Government and SSANU agreement of 2009.

Ugwoke stated that SSANU wants the government to immediately rescind the order for peace to reign. He also said a letter written has been to the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, urging him to order the  withdrawal of all letters from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, National Universities Commission and the Federal Ministry of Education directing Vice-Chancellors to remove personnel of the University Staff Primary Schools from the pay-roll.
