HELMUT SCHMIDT, FORMER GERMAN VICE-CHANCELLOR IS DEAD


Helmut Schmidt was the Chancellor of West Germany from 1974 to 1982, he died at the age of 96 on Tuesday afternoon in his home city of Hamburg .
He was during his life time a Social Democrat who helped to consolidate Germany's post-war economic boom and also helped in unifying European currency which brought about Euro.
The German Vice-Chancellor, Angela Merkel said in a televised tribute that her predecessor was an authority "whose advice and judgement meant something to me".And that the Germans developed a deep affection for him as well as his humility and sense of duty.
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and French President Francois Hollande have also expressed their grief over his death.
The European Parliament President Martin Schulz in his own reaction the news said Schmidt death "deeply affected" him.
Mr Helmut Schmidt was a hero in his life time who achieve many great deeds for his country and Europe at large.
