OSINBAJO: ELITE NIGERIANS PRESSURING BUHARI TO STOP ANTI-GRAFT WAR

The Nigeria Vice President Yemi Osinbajo,  in a statement issued on February 4 by his senior special assistant on media and publicity, Laolu Akande, has  revealed names of people pressurizing President Buhari to stop the ongoing anti-corruption war against some public officials.

The VP gave the assurance that President Buhari’s administration will not relent in fighting corruption as that is exactly  what Nigerians want.

Speaking at a parley with a delegation from the Moslem Congress of Nigeria at the Presidential Villa, Osinbajo revealed that some highly-placed Nigerians have been mouting pressures on President Buhari to halt his anti-corruption war.

The Nations reports that the Vice President further disclosed that the government had been receiving constant messages from some Nigerian elites urging that the anti-graft war be  calm down.

“We get regular messages from some Nigerian elites saying cool down. It is a very strange morality, that some of those people have, very complicated but cutting across all tribes and religious differences,” he said.

He said a new tribe of Nigerians that would not compromise their values but would preserve a sense of right and wrong is now emerging.

“The man on the street is very clear, so whatever some of these elites say, we shall keep our focus on the masses who voted for us,” Osinbajo said.

He attributed the reason for failure in the past 16 years to corruption, adding that there is no single federal government road that was completed, let alone rail. He added that the costs of such projects were usually overestimated as people entrusted with public funds enriched themselves at the expense of the people.

The Vice President further stated that it was the desire for personal enrichment that made some people to pocket the $2.1 billion meant earmarked for arms procurement while the country was under serious attack from terrorists.

He said: “The insurgency has gone on for six years because government could not adequately equip the military.”

He promised Nigerians that this administration will not relent on “the progress of this country,” because it is the main agenda of the government.

“Mr. President and I are extremely focussed on what we need to do. We will focus on critical things, infrastructure and social investments,” Osinbajo said.

Also  speaking at the meeting were Imam Abdulahi Shuaib, the leader of the delegation expressed readiness to support the government in any necessary area. He expressed gratitude that their choice candidates in the election emerged victorious, adding that it was God that made the choice of Buhari and Osinbajo in last year’s presidential election.

In another development, Osinbajo also had a meeting with delegations from the Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE) and the Facility for Oil Sector Transparency Reform (FOSTER), yesterday.

The meeting comprised a group of NGOs involved in various programmes in the Niger Delta region.

The Vice President, who praised the engineers and highlighted the importance of the profession in national development, said: “There is no question at all that engineers are central to the development of the society.”

He said all the electioneering promises of the President Muhammed Buhari led administration will be fulfilled. He assured that full implementation of the programs will commence as soon as the National Assembly passes the 2016 budget.

Vice President Osinbajo, on Wednesday, February 3 during the commissioning of some legacy projects constructed by the Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun state, promised that the present government at the centre will not make any citizen to suffer.

Osinbajo assured the NSE delegation led by its President, Mr. Otis Anyaeji of government’s commitment to the development of the Niger Delta region. He commended the group for collaborating and coming up with a common framework to support development in the area.

Responding, Mr. Richard Oshowole, who led the group, explained that it adopted a common framework to avoid duplication.
